My Labrador retriever has bi-lateral vocal chord paralysis which makes it harder for him to breath when he is exited. He can be pretty laid back, but he can also get really excited when someone comes to the door or when I feed him. Any tips on calming him down when he gets too exited?

You could teach him a “settle” command. Amp up your dog (in the safest way possible) then abruptly stop and display a calm demeanor. Give him soft pets, have him relax, then reward him once he is sufficiently calm and use the command word of your choice. Then repeat! Get him excited! Then again, stop, be boring, ask him to settle, and reward him once he is calm.

This is something, like everything, that takes repetition and consistency. Once he understands settle through play, reinforce the command if you see him exhibiting calm behaviors. Laying on the couch? Good settle! When you are about to feed him, hold the bowl and ask him to settle, do not put the bowl down until he demonstrates what you want.

Hopefully with enough practice and reinforcement, you will be able to give the command and have it work when people arrive at your door. Make sure guests know not to pet him or talk to him unless he actually is settled. Guests can be the enablers…
