Smiling Dogs

Dogs can’t have dairy, right? So why is the Puppichino a thing–starbucks gives dogs a cup full of whipped cream?

Dogs are like people when it comes to dairy. Some can digest it, some can’t, and overall it isn’t necessary. It really depends on the lactose content because most dogs are lactose intolerant. Something like whipped cream has 4 times…

My dog is a terrible walker. As soon as we get out of sight of the house, he refuses to go any farther. He wasn’t always like this (he’s almost 10 now!) but it’s gotten worse with age and he’s overweight and needs his exercise. I’ve tried driving him to a neighborhood he’s not familiar with (he won’t leave sight of the car) and having a friend drop us off a few blocks away (he won’t leave the spot where we were dropped off). Any tips? PS. He hates parks.

With the combination of old age and extra weight, he could have arthritis or even hip dysplasia. He could be in pain and not comfortable with walking. I would have him checked by your vet.

Hey just wondering if you have some insight on this situation: My boyfriends dachshund used to be very well potty trained and he could let her roam his place freely. Then suddenly she started going pee everywhere as if she had never been potty trained and he has to keep her confined to the bathroom usually because that’s where her bed and stuff is and she won’t go potty there. Do you know why she’d suddenly forget her potty training?

Sometimes a UTI can be the cause. I would take her to the vet and have her urine checked before looking at behavioral issues.

Can I ask a question? I recently got a 7 month old puppy and she’s perfect in every way. But she won’t sleep in my bed next to me? I thought that was a sign that the doggy loved their owner? She always wants to sleep on the floor in the hallway.

She will sleep wherever she is most comfortable. Don’t take it personally! It has nothing to do with how she feels about you, no worries. My dog sleeps in my bed in the winter because it’s cold, but sprawls out…

My parents always owned Chessies and they’re the greatest dogs, each one has such a unique personality and if they have training and frequent playtimes then they’re perfect for anyone. Still a handful though.

They definitely need that structured training. They are beautiful pups, though!

To your anon worried about shelter dogs– a lot of shelter websites have bios & sometimes scales of things like energy level, leash skills, ease of training, etc. And the organization I volunteer for puts all their animals in foster homes, so they have a better idea of how these dogs will behave in a home and the foster owners are really good about providing thorough & up-to-date info about their behavior. so you can still get a decent idea about a shelter dog’s personality before committing!
