Do you have any advice for someone planning to adopt a dog for the first time?

We’ve talked a lot about the specifics of adopting dogs previously, so if you’re looking for some specific advice, please search it on our blog or send us another ask! In general, my advice is just to be honest with…

my dog (a ~10 year old dachshund/chihuahua) gets eye boogers on occasion, and when i clean them off he insists on eating them. like he won’t leave me alone until i let him lick the fingers i used to clean off his eye boogers. should i be worried or is he just a gross weirdo?

It sounds like he’s just a gross weirdo. Lots of dogs insist on eating their nail clippings or those tufts of undercoat you can pull out when they’re blowing coat, so it could just be a quirk of your dog…

We often let our dog out to pee in the garden, but recently she’s been peeing on the terrace. It first happened when I let her out before bed, so I thought she was just tired, and the terrace was covered in snow, so it’s difficult to cross. However, she still pees on the terrace, even though we now have cleared a path in the snow for her, and have tried to cover the scent of her pee as best we could. How can I teach her not to pee on the terrace, especially now in winter, when there is no grass?

Go outside with her and walk her to the grass. Don’t give her the opportunity to pee on the terrace. It sucks, but it’s a pretty surefire way to solve your issue. -C

I have two sister beagle-dachshund mixes and they both have issues. There are 2 things i really need advice on, if you can offer that. 1) even when the food bowl is full, they will go to it and try to overturn it, or dig at it or shove it with their nose. They still eat from it though. What does that mean and how can i make it stop? 2) they constantly growl and fight with each other and get into nasty fights. We’ve tried some stuff, it hasnt stopped and its getting old. Any advice?

Neither of these are questions we can answer over the internet. Please see a behaviourist who can help you in person. -C

Hey! I feel like you spend alot of time with dogs and have a question about whether or not i should get one. Ive had this job for a year and gone on 3 “business trips” i guess you could call them and i really want to get a redbone or black and tan but im not sure if it would be smart seeing how i travel alot. I know that i have family and friends that could watch and take care of it while I was gone but im debating. Thoughts?

I am in a very similar situation to you, anon. I just took this new job which involves quite a bit of out-of-town travel as well. Here is my advice: Find your primary person to watch your dog. If possible,…

I’ve heard mixed opinions and I’m wondering: are furminators bad for dogs like labradors? I know it’s horrible for dogs like poodles or Portuguese water dogs, but my lab sheds like crazy and it gets SO much hair. I use the furminator every 2-4 weeks and use the zoomgroom any other time. If it does damage the coat, what alternatives do you recommend? Specific products would be very helpful. Thanks!!

I think they are bad if they’re misused. If you brush your dog with all your strength for hours on end, you’re going to seriously damage their coat. I think they are fine with moderation for any double-coated breed, so…
